How to split a bill (with tax and tip)
There are two fair ways to split a restaurant or group bill. Split evenly divides the whole total — subtotal plus tax and tip — equally between everyone. It's the fastest and works when people ordered roughly the same. Split by what each person ordered takes each person's own items and adds their proportional share of tax and tip on top, so the person who got the steak and two cocktails pays more than the person who had a salad.
This calculator does the math both ways. The awkward part was never the arithmetic, though — it's collecting. That's what tab. is for: file a tab for each person's share and they get a reminder until it's settled, no chasing required.
